When needed you can remove the mattress easily and wash it in a washing machine. There is a zip on a longer side. The washing instructions are placed on a label inside the mattress.   

The mattress is fixed to the shelf by means of six snap fasteners. One part of the snap fastener is in the mattress, the second part is screwed in the wood. The snap fasteners is made of stainless steel.
